Find and listen to new music -- Playlistshare Print E-mail
Tuesday, 28 March 2006

 http://playlistshare.org

Do you like music? Probably. Are you sick of listening to the same things over and over again? Probably. We hear ya.

Playlistshare is our newest project to help you find new music online. Complete with a radio player, it combines lots of new technology and open source projects to deliver you a unique internet experience.

Head over there now and sign up. Its free to register. Keep in mind that the project is in alpha stages... almost beta. What does that mean? Well that means, that we're still working on it, so some things might not be working right now. A lot of functionality is in the works, but everything takes time (especially other projects). So, whenever we have free time, we are trying to get this project completed.

I do not have any sort of user manual at this time, but the site should be fairly intuitive. Please use the forum for any questions / suggestions / bugs... (That will eventually be built in to the site).

Here is a quick technical overview of playlist share.

User Interface

We use the incredible prototype and scriptaculous javascript libraries for all the frontend user interface.

The radio player is a combination of the open source .xspf player , the prototype library, and a custom javascript radio library.

The page layout is an Owlwatch design. Pretty iPod-ish, eh?

Backend / Framework

We use Joomla! for the site framework. Playlist share is actually just a big component for Joomla.

The component uses a custom MVC framework built by Owlwatch. We built it to be able to handle multiple pages without a huge switch statment in the main component page. It has proved to be very flexible, so far. It even has a mini ORM structure built in (sort of like propel , not as full featured, but only one file).

The MVC framework combines Joomla's use of php output buffering and the prototype library to deliver "AJAX"ified content.

Search

Our search uses RSS feeds from blogdigger.com and parses .xspf files from Webjay.org.
